Laurel Wreaths
Laurel Wreaths...many of us in the Eastern United States are familiar with the lovely flowering evergreen known as the Mountain Laurel. Mountain laurel bushes are sometimes confused with Bay Laurel trees (an unrelated evergreen), which are used in making the popular Laurel Wreaths.
The Bay Laurel is a small Mediterranean tree spoken of in Greek and Roman literature. The practice of weaving laurel wreaths began with the people of those cultures fashioning bay laurel leaves and branches into half circlets, which were then given as crowns to the winners of contests and battles. It became a symbol of victory. Julius Ceasar and our own modern Olympics come to mind when thinking of laurel wreaths famous symbolism.
Today if you wish to purchase or create a laurel wreath you will have chosen a worthwhile objective, as the results can be quite pleasing to the senses. Ancient laurel wreaths tended to be of a half circle or horse shoe curve shape. That is still a popular choice as this design makes a very pretty door hanging or entryway decoration, etc. Another option is the typical circular wreath, which also can add distinctive beauty to your holiday decor'. Bay Laurel is a very aromatic plant and wreaths containing it's branches and leaves will add both color and pleasant seasonal scents to your home.
A laurel wreath can be made by layering laurel branches over a basic straw wreath or a half circle frame. You should be able to find laurel branches at a florists in your area, especially as the end of the year draws near. The florist will tell you how to keep them fresh, but with most evergreens you simply keep the leaves lightly sprayed with water. Using wreath pins or floral pins, attach a layer of laurel leaves and branches to the straw and then add a second row overtop (overlapping) the first until the entire straw wreath is covered in laurel. Add bows or other accents to match your color scheme. You can also spray paint the whole wreath in green or gold, etc. if you desire to keep it looking fresh and long lasting.
