Fall Wreaths

Some folks call them Fall Wreaths, others call them Autumn or Harvest Wreaths. Whatever you call them, these wreaths are among the most stunning depictions of the last season before winter.

This time of year is an abundant one. The gardens have produced a rich harvest for canning and freezing. The squash and pumpkins are ready for the cellar. There is wine from the grape vines and cider from the apples.

Autumn is a wonderful time of year and a perfect time to decorate with fall wreaths. You may be able to find a few ready made harvest wreaths to beautify your home for Thanksgiving, or you can try your hand at making your own.

Here is what you will need to make your own fall wreath:

- pruning shears or heavy duty scissors
- strong wire for twining
- 16-18 inch grapevine wreath for base (bought or home-made)
- small crookneck squash and gourds of various colors (can be bought at grocery stores, farmers market, etc. in the fall)
- dried green moss (you can find died in other colors as well0
- small branches of fall leaves of various colors

1. Pull the strands of grape vine apart some so that the squash and such can be woven into it.

2. Now begin to weave the small gourds/squash into the vine, fitting against each other snugly all the way around the wreath.

3. Take the twining wire and weave it into the vine and over the squash necks so that it holds them firmly in place.

4. When all the gourds are secure, go back and fill in the spaces with moss and fall leaves wherever you think they look nice (also using wire to hold them firmly to the wreath).

5. Lastly you can buy a wreath hanger or simply fashion a big hook with your strong wire onto the back of your wreath.

Now you are ready to display your lovely fall wreath by hanging it on a gate or door or wall for all to enjoy.
